Short Notes is an editorial journal covering Chicago's live events. These notes are for visitors travelling to Chicago specifically to attend events.
Airports
O'Hare (ORD) is the main international gateway, with CTA Blue Line service directly to the Loop. Midway (MDW) is served by the CTA Orange Line. Journey time from O'Hare to the Loop by CTA is approximately 45 minutes; from Midway approximately 30 minutes.
Amtrak
Chicago's Union Station on the Near West Side is the main Amtrak hub for the Midwest and a major long-distance connection point. From Union Station, the Loop is about a 10-minute walk or a short CTA or Metra ride.
During your stay
See our getting to venues guide for event-night transport notes. Most Chicago entertainment venues are reachable by CTA from any central neighbourhood.
Planning Your Trip Around the Event
Once flights or trains are sorted, the next decisions are timing and where to stay. For a single evening concert or game, arriving the day before gives a buffer against delays, which matter most in winter when snow and wind can disrupt flights at both O'Hare and Midway. If your event finishes late, check whether your return connection leaves the following morning rather than trying to make a same-night departure.
Choosing a base
Staying in or near the Loop, River North or the South Loop keeps you close to multiple CTA lines, which makes reaching venues across the city simpler. If your event is in a specific neighbourhood, such as Wrigleyville for a Cubs game or the West Loop for an arena show, a hotel along the relevant train line can save time and taxi fares after the crowds leave. Large conventions, festival weekends and major sports fixtures push hotel prices up and availability down, so book accommodation as soon as your event tickets are confirmed. Our planning notes cover more on timing a stay.
Getting around with a transit card
Visitors can pay CTA fares with a Ventra card, the Ventra app or a contactless bank card or phone at the turnstile. Multi-day passes are available and can be good value if you plan several trips a day. Metra commuter rail is separate from the CTA and useful for venues and days out in the suburbs, but trains run less frequently in the evening and at weekends, so check timetables before you rely on a late service.
Practical checks before you travel
- Confirm the venue's bag policy; many arenas and stadiums only allow small or clear bags, and storage nearby is limited.
- Check the official event page for door times, as these can differ significantly from the advertised start.
- Pack for the season: Chicago summers can be hot and humid, and winters are cold with strong wind off the lake, especially when queuing outdoors.
- Keep digital tickets downloaded in case mobile signal is weak around a busy venue.
