Short Notes does not handle accommodation. These notes are a general orientation for visitors to Chicago attending events.

The Loop and River North are the most central hotel areas and are within walking distance of the Loop theatre venues and a short CTA ride from most others. Navy Pier and Streeterville are convenient for lakefront events. For budget options, the Hostelling International Chicago hostel is in the Loop. Many of the entertainment neighbourhoods — Lincoln Park, Wicker Park — have independent and boutique hotel options as well as Airbnb.

Prices are highest in summer (June–August) and during major events including Lollapalooza weekend. Book ahead for any visit during festival season.

Choosing a Base Around Your Event

The simplest way to pick a neighbourhood is to start from the venue you care most about and work outwards along the transit lines. Chicago's 'L' network radiates from the Loop, so a hotel near a station on the line that serves your venue often matters more than raw distance. Wrigley Field and many North Side music rooms sit close to the Red Line, for example, while the United Center is better reached by bus or the Pink and Green lines and is easier with a little extra time built in on game or concert nights.

Getting to and from the airports

Both airports connect to the city by rail: the Blue Line runs from O'Hare through downtown, and the Orange Line links Midway with the Loop. If you are arriving with luggage, staying within a short walk of either line can save a taxi fare and the uncertainty of traffic, especially on a Friday evening.

Practical points before you book

  • Check the total price. Chicago hotels commonly add taxes and sometimes nightly fees, and downtown parking can be expensive, so compare the full cost rather than the headline rate.
  • Think about late finishes. After a late show, a short walk or a direct train back is worth paying a little more for. Check current late-night service on the CTA website before you rely on it.
  • Watch the calendar. Beyond summer festivals, large conventions at McCormick Place and big sporting weekends can fill rooms across the city, not just near the venue.
  • Read cancellation terms. Flexible rates are useful if an outdoor event might be affected by weather.

Winter and shoulder seasons

Visiting between late autumn and early spring often brings lower rates, and the theatre, comedy and club calendars stay busy all year. The trade-off is cold, windy weather, which makes being close to your venue or a station more valuable.
